The Blue Ridge Belles exist as part of a larger vision: to help the Blue Ridge become a place where a cappella harmony flourishes.
We believe everyone should have the opportunity to experience the joy of close harmony, whether as a singer or an audience member. Through performances, education, and welcoming new voices, we’re working to grow a vibrant culture of barbershop and contemporary a cappella throughout Central Virginia.
The Blue Ridge Belles is one chapter of that story, alongside the Blue Ridge Harmeneers men’s chorus as our harmony family grows.

What We Believe

Harmony
We sing ringing four-part harmony rooted in the barbershop tradition while embracing other close harmony styles that inspire and delight.
Barbershop harmony is an exciting blend of artistry, teamwork, and listening. Every voice matters, and every singer contributes to the sound.

Friendship
We believe harmony begins with getting to know one another, where encouragement, laughter, and shared experiences help every singer grow.

What is Barbershop Harmony?
Many people have heard the term “barbershop” but have never experienced it in person.
Barbershop harmony is an a cappella style of four-part singing known for its rich chords, ringing harmonies, and expressive storytelling. While the style has deep historical roots, today’s barbershop includes music from many genres, from classic standards to contemporary songs, folk music, Broadway, country, and more.
Every singer has an important role:
Tenor
Adds the highest harmony above the melody.
Lead
Usually sings the melody.
Baritone
Completes the chord by filling in the middle harmony, which could be above or below the melody.
Bass
Provides the rich foundation of the chord.
The result is a sound that is greater than the sum of its parts.
